Stopped working and Amazon refuses to replace -- 2010-03-09
This is my second purchase of the humidifier as I purchased one for my parents home and it stopped working after
1 1/2 months of use. Amazon is refusing to replace the defective product because it's outside of the 30 day return policy. I'm not trying to return the merchandise, I'm trying to exchange the defective one for a new one. I own the same unit and have used it for several months without problems. I'm extremely disappointed in the unit and it being a huge waste of money.
Easy to use and works great -- 2010-03-05
Could not be simpler, I'm not sure how people have had issues with it:
- Take it out of the box
- Put water in it
- Turn it on (sounds kind of like a fish tank filter system)
- Clean it when ever you want
What more could you ask for from a humidifier?

We followed the care instructions for this item, and it worked well in the beginning, but despite cleaning it regularly and according to the directions, minerals built up on the filter and the tank got a black residue that was impossible to remove. The tank does not come apart for easy cleaning. It has a hole in the top to pour water in that is about an inch and a half wide, so you cannot clean the inside of the tank well. We tried shoving a rag into the the tank and shaking vigorously when using the weekly bleach to disinfect, but the process could not remove the black residue. After about a month of use, it also started leaking. Finally,the automatic cut-off function works only after the water completely runs out. When the water completely runs out, the unit is more difficult to clean. Very disappointed overall. I had researched humidifiers to try to find a reliable, affordable one that did not require replacement filters. I guess the search continues.
good product but high maintenance -- 2010-03-05
I am happy with the performance and design of the machine, but it requires weekly soaking and cleaning with vinegar to remove scale. After one week of use and one attempted cleaning, some of the black scale came off when wiped with a rag, but there is still some being sucked up into the water tank and turns the water gray with black pieces floating. At this point it doesn't affect the performance. This is my first humidifier, so I don't know what the others require for cleaning.

when I purchased the vicks humidifier, Amazon offered this as the pad for the humidifier. bought it together but it DOESN'T FIT!!!! don't be tempted, just buy the pads separately.

I bought the Honeywell HWM450 humidifier at the beginning of January. I use these and checked if it needed cleaning, and it hasn't been dirty enough to need it. My previous humidifier, that I used without these pads cause I didn't know about them, got much dirtier and needed cleaning much more. (both are warm mist types). The beginning of March was the first time I needed to clean it, before that all I did was replace these pads when they were dirty, about 1-2 weeks, and the first time I didn't even replace it but just washed it clean. That only seems to work one time then the pad starts to buckle and not fit good, but even if I didn't do that they're so cheap, they're worth it. Seeing how they work, I wish I'd ordered more than 1 box of 12. I'll be ordering them again.

I purchased this when my 6 year old started to get nose bleeds do to the dryness of the air in our home. My son loves the look of it, I love how simple it is to use, and how quiet it is. It has worked great, and we have no more nose bleeds!! It also arrived two days after I ordered it, even with a snow delay!!

I bought a penguin now a few months ago in the beginning of the winter. My room is in the half basement where the furnace is located and gets very dry when it runs in the winter and this little guy pumps up the enough moisture into the air for me. Great product and very easy to use. Fill up the tank and it will last a good full week.

The product quility seemed good, but the advertisement said it was two sets of filters. My unit takes two filters each so I assumed I would get 4 filter units. I only recieved 2. They are calling a set, 1 filter. I didn't look to see if the quanities were correct on the advertisement.

You get what you pay for -- 2010-01-10
The filter was priced fairly, and the box did say Honeywell (it wasn't a knock-off as some other reviews indicated it might be). I used the filter with a Pro-tec cartridge last winter and didn't change the filter once. In fact, I never even looked at it until it was time to set it up again this winter. That's when I realized it was pretty moldy and I should buy a new one. I received the new filter on Dec. 22 - it didn't even last me a month!!!
The only thing I did differently this time around was TRY to take better care of the filter to extend its life...because the filter arrived before the protec cartridge (both of which I ordered on Amazon) I used a drop of bleach in the water tanks. The mist had a bleach odor, which didn't bother me, but my boyfriend was concerned about our newborn breathing in the chemical - so I quit using bleach when the protect cartridge arrived. I also flipped the filter everyday, so the top part (which tended to dry out) stayed moist. Within a few days of the Protect cartridge and no bleach, the filter started to reek of mold and then it actually began to fall apart. The filter was crumbling and stunk. I just threw it out and am back online to order again.
What have I learned: While my humidifier kicks butt and keeps the entire upstairs area moist in the winter, the amount of time, energy and money I spend in filters and protect cartridges just doesn't make it worthwhile. I could buy three cheapo cool-mist humidifiers, with their itty bitty filters and wash them each once a week - and that's still less work daily! ...not to mention a heck of a lot cheaper!

I purchased this filter for my Vicks V3100 home humidifier. I regularly performed operational maintenance on my humidifier, including washing the filter. Despite the maintenance the filter slowly became discolored from the natural pollutants and minerals contained in my water. The Protec Extended Life Humidifier Filter helped solve my problem.
It is inexpensive and effective only if I carefully care for the filter. To avoid frequently replacing the filter, I use a procedure that can extend the life of the filter. When the filter forms a crust, I soak it for awhile in vinegar water (usually 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water). After soaking I carefully rinse the filter several times in fresh water. Then I treat the water with Kaz KWT-8 Humidifier and Vaporizer Water Treatment.
So, after several months, I no longer have a problem with the filter or my humidifier.

Poor Wicking and Mold -- 2010-02-15
I bought two three packs at the beginning of December for two humidifiers we use throughout the winter months. Within a week; the humidifiers output had decreased and mold began forming at the top of the wicks; we replaced them thinking it may have been due to our not cleaning the humidifier very well; so we cleaned the humidifier, use distilled water and again within a weeks, very dank smell and black mold appearing in the wicks. They just do not seem to wick very well and we are now on our last set of wicks - No wonder they sell them in three packs; that's how many you will need! Three in three months is too many; last year we purchased filters from Target (wish I could remember the brand) and they lasted all season with no problems. I do not recommend these filters.

I have used only one of these cartridges, but it kept shutting down the humidifier. When I called the help line (1-800-336-0326) the nice lady insisted that I try to remove a few tablespoons of the granules and try it again. This made the unit run longer between stops, so I removed almost half of the granules, but it still stopped. This updated product seems to be self-clogging. I put the old style refill granules in the cartridge and now it works fine again.
Hint to refill: put a paper towel in the center opening of the cartridge and pour the granules in around it. When they get to the top just tap the cartridge up and down to settle the granules. Then remove the paper towel.
Not sure it's reducing dust . . . -- 2010-01-12
Maybe I should try my Air-o-Swiss 7135 without the cartridge, because I still get plenty of dust. I'd like to see how much I get *without* the filter.
For me it was no problem using the refill packs as opposed to the new cartridge. Just dump out the old and dump in the new with the extra parts included. Definitely worth the savings.
