overall happy with the Dyson -- 2010-09-05
I am quite happy with this Dyson. The only minor complaint I have is that the flexible extension is not as flexible as I would like especially when using it to reach under furniture. It does an excellent job of cleaning our rugs and hardwood floors.

Dyson's SUCKtion - lousy customer support -- 2010-09-03
I just got off the phone Dyson's customer service dept.--for the second time. I purchased my DC14 from Home Depot in 2008 (2 years ago). It came with a tag on it stating there was a 5 year Warranty. Recently one of the belts broke (of course the one inside that I can't get to). I called because I don't have the receipt and the first time I called them, they told me a Serial Number would suffice if I lost the receipt. The second time I called, I was told that the vacuum was made in 2006 according to the serial # and was no longer under warranty since in 2006 they only came with 2 Year Warranties (even though the tag on it said "5 Year Warranty"). Basically I was told I was S-O-L and I would have to order parts and pay to have it fixed. Dyson needs to have better support if it's going to charge such outrageous prices for its products. I will NEVER by another Dyson product.

Love this vaccum -- 2010-09-06
I love this vaccum! Prior to this vaccum I had a Kirby for 12 years. It was time for a new vaccum. I love the way I can maneuver this vaccum. I mostly have hard floors and I wanted a vaccum easy to use. I use it almost every day. I hardly ever use the broom any more. The canister is extremely easy to remove to empty! Very smart! It transitions very easily from hard floor to carpet by pushing a button, even while it's moving!

Never had a vacuum that has lasted this long Dyson DC07 -- 2010-09-04
I've owned the DC07 for about 4 years now. It's still going strong despite the abuse my family and I put it through.

We are a family of four with three cats. We all have long hair (including our cats) I have to say that every other vacuum I have owned has broken down within a year except this one. Brand name, no name, high end, you name it over the past 20 years I have almost always had to buy a new one or repair every year.

The only problem I have with it is the fact that the long handle stays in the unit and it is just the floppy hose that comes out. I can't find an extender for it either so doing the kitchen floor is a pain as I have to basically get down on my knees to do it.

I'd love to buy a new one but this one still operates the way it did when I first got it. Maybe when my son moves out I will give it to him and buy a new one for myself.

Small size, average performance -- 2010-08-30
This is one of the smallest and also one of cheapest offerings in the Dyson line of uprights. It features the Dyson ball (not to be confused with a Dyson sphere), which along with its small size and weight makes it incredibly maneuverable. Suction is average at best, especially compared to the larger models. Good thing the cyclone techonology prevents loss of suction, because you will need every bit of it.

On hard flooring you're better off with a shop vac as this will often just push dirt around rather than pick it up. On carpet performance is adequate but lack of edge cleaning is frustrating and the rotating brushes also have a tendency to tangle easily with hair. The cord is too short, often requiring switching outlets in larger rooms. It would probably be a better idea just to have a short on-vac cord and let the owner supply their own extension cord (like most power tools) given how useless it is.

The two filters used in the vac are permanent and washable. While this may seem to be a good feature by the designers, the filter in the ball is hard to access, takes over a day to air dry, and after a few washings acquires a nice hot, cooked mildewy odor which the vac then spreads across the house. There's a cleaning wand that pops out of the handle in a convoluted and complex fashion that takes more time than it should. When you've deployed the cleaning wand you'll find that it's short and pathetically knocks the vac over and lifts it when you try to clean anything higher than a coffee table. There are two attachments, an edge cleaning tool and some type of brush. In my experience only the edge cleaning tool has the adequate suction to be of any use.

Construction quality is cheap and plasticky. The power and brush buttons often require several good stabs to actually do anything. It's probably a better idea leave the power button to "on" and just unplug it to save time.

Good thing that it comes with a 5 year warranty--which I haven't had to use, yet.

In short:
Pros: small, light, cheapest of the Dyson line of uprights, good warranty
Cons: average suction which is unacceptable on hard floors, short extension cord, short hose on cleaning wand, still expensive, washable filters are a pain to wash and start to smell, cleaning wand is cumbersome and irritating to use

Advice: Don't buy this overpriced underperforming vacuum.

Great strength vs. ease-of-use balance -- 2010-08-28
We live in a not so big house on 3 stories where closet space is at a premium and a vacuum has lots of obstacles to maneuver around. We've also got three kids and a cat. For us this Dyson has been a great balance of cleaning power and usability. We looked at the bigger, cheaper standups from Hoover and Kenmore (and even Dyson) but opted against lugging and storing these bigger and heavier machines. What we love... it's very light, compact and easy to store. It's very nimble. The whole ball idea means it really does turn on a dime, super useful we have relatively limited wide open spaces and plenty of furniture to move with a bigger vacuum. Suction is way stronger than our previous vac (a 10 year old Hoover) and does a good job on all the cat hair. Guessing the bigger standups might be a little stronger in this area but tradeoff just not worth it for us. I didn't really care much about the bag vs. bagless thing but the bagless dust collector on this Dyson is pretty handy. Pops off easily and dumps it's cargo in your trash can without much fuss. The overhead/hose assembly seems fine (just one accessory head) though so far we don't use it much. All in all we're very happy, and hoping for a good durability story as well over the years, even though it does have a lifetime warranty.

Useless for stairs and above-the-floor jobs -- 2010-09-07
I was so excited to bring this vacuum home. I have a couple of friends who own Dysons and ranted and raved about how good they are. I have about 1,000 sq feet of tile and 1,000 sq feet of carpet in my home, plus a carpeted staircase. I was able to combine a Kohl's 30% off coupon with my Kohl's charge card along with a price match to purchase this vacuum for about $340. I did the "Dyson test" when I got home. I first vacuumed with my old $50 Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner that I've owned for 3 years, then followed with the Dyson. The Dyson barely picked anything else up - I think it's because I keep my floors relatively clean to begin with, and perhaps I didn't give my old Dirt Devil enough credit. I do believe that the Dyson has great suction and gets things clean. It also has a VERY easy cannister to empty, and I like that there are no bags to buy and washable filters. It is also very light-weight. With that said, the following cons were deal breakers for me, and I ultimately returned it after trying and trying for a month to get used to using it:

1. My old Dirt Devil has swivel caster wheels in the front and back, and the Dyson ball was actually far less maneuverable than the Dirt Devil. The ball makes it hard to steer in a straight line if you are trying to clean along the edge of a wall. The vacuum tends to want to wabble all over the place due to the ball design.
2. The edge cleaning did not work well at all compared to my Dirt Devil, and I usually had to follow with an attachment to clean near the baseboards.
3. The hose connects to the bottom of the vacuum and sticks out on the side. Additionally, the gray wheels that are used to roll the vacuum from one room to another when not in use also stick out on the sides. This means that when steering around corners, furniture, etc., the hose and the wheels often bump into objects. Apart from making it difficult to get around, the wheels are also made of hard plastic which can scratch or scuff your walls.
4. The part of the vacuum which cleans the floors has a hard plastic bumper instead of a rubber bumper. The bumper is relatively flush with the vacuum, which means areas of the vacuum above the bumper make contact with the walls, too. I noticed it taking some of the paint off the walls (scuffs on the vacuum that are the same color as my walls/baseboards). Though I didn't see visible damage on the walls (yet), obviously if it is removing paint, it is causing damage, and over time I worried this would be an issue.
5. The #1 deal breaker for me is that the hose and attachments are a HUGE pain. If you are at all concerned about the hose being too stiff, DO NOT purchase this product. The hose is so stiff that it will tip the vacuum over or roll the vacuum towards you before it will stretch out, especially when using on tile or hard floors that do not have any extra resistance. Additionally, the wand is about 3 feet long when attached and makes it hard to use the attachments for up close jobs like cleaning window sills or upholstery. I found I would have to disconnect the wand and connect the attachments directly to the hose, which meant having no wand at all, but was easier than using the long one. The wand is difficult to detach and made it a huge hassle to quickly take the wand out and clean an area as I saw it. My dirt devil hose attached in a snap, and the wand was only about 1.5 feet long and I could attach an extension if needed, which proved more practical for my purposes. I have heard that the hose may stretch after extended use, but it was so hard to use, that I do not believe I would have had the ability to use it enough to stretch it out. My husband tried stretching the hose and leaving it overnight, but it didn't make a significant difference.

It's a shame that there are so many design flaws, because I believe the vacuum itself is very powerful. However, I constantly utilize the hose and attachments on my old vacuum, and to own a vacuum where this is so inconvenient that it deters me from using it, it's just not worth it. I am on the hunt for a better replacement and will use my $50 Dirt Devil in the meantime.

this was an overpriced waste that can't even pick up a dried leaf -- 2010-09-04
The regular part of the vacuum works OK but the Tool is useless. It will also not go back down its hose without a great deal of effort. I believed the hype. I am very dissatisfied with my purchase and I waited a week too long to return it because I was out of town. I did not know it was 60 days. It is not even that easy to handle. Friends who have the non ball one have less complaints but after spending 400 on this..I can not afford anything else.

Small Jobs -- 2010-07-26
This product last only 6-10 minutes on a 3 hour charge. However it does a great job until it needs to be charged up again. The 6-10 minutes is detailed in the instructions not in the item discription.

LOVE my new DYSON -- 2010-07-16
Super powered and effective -- not sure why it took me so long to get one! Definitely delivers on prodcut performance and stands head and shoulders above the rest. LOVE IT!

Dyson DC23 TurbineHead Canister VacuumDyson DC23 TurbineHead Canister Vacuum

Simply the best -- 2010-09-06
I had an older generation animal upright... it worked perfectly and the only reason I didn't keep it is that I moved from a country that didn't have the same voltage so it wouldn't have worked here. I was skeptical about a cannister vac since I'd only had uprights. I deliberated for about six weeks after we moved, using a borrowed hoover, which in my opinion just pushes the dirt around a little. I read lots of reviews online and eventually was deliberating between the dc17 animal and the dc23 turbinehead. I didn't want the motorhead because one of my issues is that I didn't want the noisy head - I have a bulldog who goes ballistic about vacuum cleaners.

I'm an ebay gal so got it there for $300, shipping included. It still has the 5 year warranty from dyson, so no risk. I unpacked it on a Friday afternoon and vacuumed the whole house. Bear in mind I've always had a dyson. I LOVED it. Much lighter than the upright and so manoeuverable... and it sits on the stairs! In my opinion way better than the one I had before. And the thing can suck... we emptied the cannister twice. Note that it didn't lose any suction when it was full. The motor was not particularly loud - again, much quieter than my upright.

As far as the criticism I've seen here, I can't relate. The power button is near the floor - give it a push with your toe, for heaven's sake. Also the head slots neatly into the front of the dyson, so storage is no issue. Quite honestly it's an attractive machine. Also, for the person who complained that it spits dirt... I didn't find that at all as long as you keep the head flat on the floor and don't tilt up the back of it (duh).

In short, amazing. I imagine I'll be keeping it till it falls apart, which will hopefully be a long time from now!

1st Canister Vac for me -- 2010-07-19
My New Dyson DC23 Canister Vac is a 1st time adventure with a canister for me except from 40 years ago. I researched canister Vacs prior to my purchase & although I did not find much input from rating sites on this model, I was able to gather some data that convinced me that the Dyson would be a good choice for me. I have had it just a few weeks but feel that I made a good choice. It is easy to use, has a lot of suction, tools connect & disconnect easily. The dirt cup & filter are so easy to empty & clean. I own numerous Vacs including 2 Dyson uprights, an Oreck & a Kirby. Each of them performs floor cleaning well but I dislike the hand tool fiasco with them. This Dyson Canister may not totally replace my uprights but it certainly is a good addition to my "fleet" of Vacs.

Great Vacuum, filter Does Clog -- 2010-08-24
I have had this dyson for about 3 years now. and let me tell you the filter Does clog! it is a real dirty mess to clean it up. But you still can't get another vacuum to clean like ths one. I was worried at first because it's PLASTIC, but soon learned that it is VERY DURABLE! I have a single level home like others that have mentioned before. I wouldn't like this big beast if I had to lugg up stairs, but for a single level home or if you're a young man it is the Best I have found as much as it upsets me that the filter does clog, Everytime I use it. I have to use a brush to clean out the filter. I still will not go with another vacuum. I paid a lot for this vacuum and am still happy that I did. Like others I vacuumed with my old Eureka vacuum immediately followed with the Brand New Dyson, and OMG! I had to empty the dyson twice before I finished I didn't realize how Filthy my floors were before that. Now when I vacuum it truly is CLEAN and NO DUST FLOATING AROUND TO CLEAN UP LATER!! I have to dust less, I have less trouble with my sinuses too.

Dyson makes a great main unit! Need to work on accesories... -- 2010-08-16
The Dyson DC28 Animal is a great choice of a floor vacuum for people with pets. We have two dogs and two cats, so you can imagine the hair build up every day from shedding.

Out of the box I was very impressed with the Dyson's ability to suck up the hair from the carpet. It looks practically new again. I filled the canister with a small area even after having just used my old vacuum!

The power no matter the carpet or bare floor is unmatched with the main power head. I was extremely impressed and pleased. Even the kids wanted to use the Dyson!

The fact that the canister had to be emptied a little more often than my old vacuum was of no consequence to me because of the sheer power of the vacuum.

Then I went to use the attachments...

The fact the wand has to come all the way out of the unit is a pain, especially when all I want to do is get that one small spot and I have to guide the end into the crevice or some small space... Makes it unwieldy.

I tried using the mini power head to do the stairs and finally gave up, the suction power that was so great in the upright portion of the unit was lost as soon as I put that mini piece on. Sure the brush spins fast, but that's all it does, the suction is seriously lacking. I would have to go over the same spot multiple times to pull up the surface dirt.

I'm happy with my purchase for doing the floors, I just have to find something else to do my stairs. That makes me unhappy.

Dyson is getting a nasty letter regarding their accessories.

Impressive Performance, Worth the Cost -- 2010-08-23
Terrific machine! Used it on some loop and pile carpet and could hardly believe how well it picked up lint, pet hair and everyday crumbs, paper scraps, etc. The extra 'beater" tool that comes with this model (not included on the DC31 [non-animal] handheld model) did an amazing job vacuuming up cat hair that was well embedded into the mock-fur lining of a cat carrier, and was equally impressive removing cat hair from a fabric covered couch. Did it grab every single strand of pet hair? Of course not. Nevertheless, this vacuum is far superior to any of the other heavy-duty "dust-buster" type handhelds I've used. I find it to be as effective as a high-end upright, only a lot less heavy and bulky. Despite the substantial price tag, the strong performance makes it an excellent value.

Unless you need to use it a lot longer than the ten minutes or so you get per charge, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't be delighted with this handheld. Personally, I got an awful lot of vacuuming done on a single charge, in part because it worked so well I didn't have to go over the same area numerous times.

The only minor item that could be improved is the pictorial instruction sheet; it's not terrible, just not as clear as it could be.

Fast and Cleans Like a Dream Come True! -- 2010-08-04
This is my third Dyson Animal (I bought the 1st gen. upright and then I bought the Dyson DC25 Animal Ball, because it's so much easier to maneuver whilst being in a wheelchair). I love them all, but being able to pick up the Dyson DC31 Animal handheld and quickly dust before visitors arrive is just priceless. I have a cat and the Dyson DC31 Animal takes care of all cat-related fur, missed treats, & any stray litter bits. I love the Dyson's power and I'm able to clean my living room, kitchen, dining room, foyer, and almost my bedroom & bath on one charge.

The manual recommends cleaning the filter monthly. I thought it was going to be a chore. Ha! Cleaning the filter = "user friendly". No manual needed at all. I popped the unit open and the filter itself has images of a faucet on it. Brilliant!

I can't recommend the DC31 Animal handheld highly enough.

How to improve battery performance -- 2010-09-04
Very good vacuum except I was very disappointed with the battery performance. I followed the instructions for charging the battery, leave it plugged in until the light went out. I then put it in storage until the next time I needed to use it. Bad idea. One time, I forgot to unplug the vac. Next time I used it, the battery performance was very much improved. I suspect that the battery drains when it is not plugged it, so leave it plugged in until you are ready to use it and hopefully you will notice improved battery performance.

Excellent hand held -- 2010-08-23
We have had this vacuum for a couple of years now and found it to be excellent. It sucks up dirt and dust very well, but the best part is the fact you can pull it apart and wash all the filters. So it continues to operate at full efficiency. It seems well made and we have had no problems with it. The battery did stop taking a charge after about 16 months so we bought a new one, not the genuine Dyson one, but a cheaper copy, which worked.
Even though the battery was relatively expensive, around $60, it was better value than buying a new hand held vacuum which would not be as good as the Dyson, and not have the great feature of being washable.
So my advice is just bite the bullet and get the new battery when you need to and enjoy using a better quality, more effective vacuum over the longer term.

Nice Vacuum -- 2010-03-17
I bought the dyson dc24 all floors vacuum factory serviced at abc Vacuum Warehouse. The item was shipped same day I ordered it and arrived on time. The vacuum is just about new and comes with a six month warrenty from Dyson and 21/2 years from Abc Vacuum warehouse. The appliance runs well the only thing is that the cord is too short and you will probably need an extension. all in all I am a satisfied customer.
