Thoroughly Unimpressive -- 2010-07-30
After 10 years of service my 18000 BTU GE QuietAire unit gave up the ghost. This being a terrible summer in the Northeast I had a difficult time finding anyone with a large window mounted unit. I only found one large window unit in the whole area so I bought it. Installation was a pain but we got through it.

My big gripe is that the unit seems to have very little cooling power. The old GE would cool the entire downstairs very quickly. This unit ran on high for hours and finally brought the area to 75 degrees. And the unit makes more noise than the GE. Not enough that it's difficult to be in the same room with the unit but the GE was whisper quiet. I don't think I can return the unit because I need to get through the rest of the summer but I have a sinking feeling that I'm not going to be satisfied with this unit.

It works -- 2010-08-24
Much can be said about this unit but I will keep it short.
It does what it's supposed to. There are plenty of features on it.
The weight is impressive. I read that it was heavy but for it's size, it's...heavy.
I was lucky that the unit arrived in good condition. Due to the weight, I believe it could be shipped with more protection and I can see how others received broken units.

This thing runs constantly. I live in a dry climate so I don't have to empty any reservoirs. It's still keeping things cool. The filters are easy to get to and clean.

LOVE IT -- 2010-08-09
I purchase this portable airconditioner and i tell you it was not a mistake. It cools my living room to the point that i find myself putting on my hoody because it really gets cold in my livingroom and i have a big room with a long hallway. It was easy to install and the motor is really low that it will not interfere with your tv program. If you don't want the hassle of putting an aircondtioner in the window believe me this will do the job and if you have a window guard in your window you don't need to remove it. In the future i will get another one.

Disposable air conditioners? Yes, it is possible. -- 2010-07-29
When buying any Haier air conditioner, you may be taking a big chance. This air conditoner was installed in our kitchen during a heat wave when the outside temperature was 90-95 degrees outside. When turned to the lowest setting and the highest fan speed, the lowest temperature I could acheive inside the room (verified by two thermometers) was 76 degrees. 76, are you kidding??? I am starting to think these things are "disposable" air conditoners. I picked up a similar model two years ago at Target for $96, and it has the same problem. I will probably just toss these air conditioners once the summer is over, and purchase a portable unit for $300-$400 next summer. It may be four times the price, but at least I will know that the portable rolling air conditioners are more dependable, and you get a lot more BTUs for the money.

Do not buy this -- 2008-06-11
This is the worst A/C I have ever seen. First of all, even though it says on the box "ultra quiet", it is nearly as noisy as vacuum cleaner, you won't be able to sleep or talk while it is on. Also it doesn't cool well, we have a very small bedroom {only big enough to fit a queen size bed and two dressers, with not much room left} and it doesn't cool it nearly as well as our old GE Air Conditioner {that is only 5000 BTU}. I am taking it back today and will rather wait for a nicer one {all the stores are out of A/C right now and this one was the only one we found, but better nothing then this one}

24000 2 Ton Btu Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner Unit Ac System Heat Pump + Free Shipping + Free Installation Kit -- 2010-07-09
I have had this unit installed for about 3 weeks now. Overall I am very happy with it. I recieved the unit 4 days sooner than expected and in good packaging and condition. The items were as advertised, with the exception that it actually came with 25' of line, not 15'. Installation was not difficult. Although the instructions were not always clear; a liitle common sense and looking at the parts usually worked fine. (The instructions could use a proof-reading by someone who actually speaks english and preferably knows something about A/C, but the were better than many translations now days).

The unit cools my 350 SQ FT bonus room and 500 SQ FT garage way quicker than the A/C in the house cools the house. My only complaint is that the fan will never turn off in the Auto or Cooling modes for some reason. The A/C will kick off but the fan won't. In the Heat and Dry modes the fan kicks off once the room reaches the appropriate temperature. It is a little frusterating as I have to turn the unit off if I don't want to waste energy when I'm not in the room. The unit's saving grace is even though it has been about 100 Deg. F lately, it will cool the room to around 78 deg in about 8 minutes, so it's not a problem to leave it off when I'm not using the room.

The precharged system and purgeable lines work are an awesome idea and work great! The is absolutely no need for an HVAC installer or any specialy tools or equipment. I would say that is one of the key features of this system.

I would certainly reccomend this unit, even though it appears that the price has increased $400 USD since I purchased it a couple months ago. It is still a good value.

Nice cool and quiet -- 2010-06-28
Although the instruction say it should be installed by a specialist, I installed it myself. I watch a lot of home improvement shows like This Old House. I used this for a cabin in the foothills. For power I am using a generator. The unit is quiet on the inside, and not too bad on the outside. It is mostly the humming of the generator that I have work on. Most of all the unit does cool well. We hit 100 degrees over the weekend, so we moved into the cabin, and within 10 minutes it had 700 square feet cooled.

Edge Star products break, customer service stinks -- 2010-08-03
I bought an EdgeStar 13,000 btu portable a/c unit for about $550 just three years ago, and it has already broken. I've called their customer service number about 6 times, and have only spoken to someone twice. Their message to me was that I'm SOL: your unit is broken, we don't know what's wrong with it, and there is no one in your area we know of who can fix it.

By the way, I live in Boston, which is notable for two reasons: it's not a particularly taxing area on air conditioners, as they typically only need to run 3 months out of the year, and IT'S A CITY! How is there no one to service EdgeStar a/c units in the entire city??? Don't believe me? Think I'm just one angry customer? Look around the web; see what's said about them on various message and consumer watchdog sites. I googled "edgestar repair" and found that the 4th link listed belonged to [...]. Bad sign. And before you buy, do yourself a favor and check their website (www.edgestar.com). Look for yourself for any indication on where in your area you can get one of their units fixed. Then call their customer service line (866-319-5473) and ask one (and I think there is only one) of their representatives where you can get one of their a/c's fixed in your area. Good luck!

As of the middle of last week, my EdgeStar a/c is only spitting hot air, while my two other window a/c units (5 and 10 years old and NOT EdgeStar) both still work. I spent about as much on my other two units combined as my EdgeStar. Oh, and by the way, I almpst forgot to mention that a few weeks before it broke completely, its evaporator function failed (the one which is supposed to expel the moist air from inside the room outside through the unit's hose) and overnight ruined several planks in my hardwood floor. Good news is after it broke entirely, it's been off and so no longer leaking, so my floor had dried out and partially recovered. I suspected this final failure might be due to a hari kari function of the unit--i.e. if it fails in any aspect of its functioning it honorably self-destructs--but so far I can find no mention of this in the manual. Still, I'm willing to give EdgeStar the benefit of the doubt on this one. Thanks, EdgeStar!

Finally, I'll soon be posting a 40 lb EdgeStar paperweight on ebay. Bidding sarts at $5 plus s&h.

So, I guess the moral of my message to you, prospective buyer, is
