Couldn't Be Happier -- 2010-08-29 I have a Gateway FX laptop that I specifically bought to play Starcraft II. The laptop is notorious for running hot and when I put in a second hard drive, it got hotter. When Starcraft II was running like crap for me, a friend let me borrow his cooler and it made things a ton better. I searched for one of my own and based on the reviews, got the Zalman.
It did exactly what I hoped it would do. It lowered the temperature of my GPU, CPU and hard drives to the point where playing Starcraft II is the awesome experience as it was meant to be. Just on the visual perception of the game running a ton smoother, I am satisfied. I was curious about the actual measurements so I did a before and after test with and without the cooler using SpeedFan to measure the temps
Laptop at rest, no cooler:
GPU HD0 HD1 Temp1 Temp2 Core 1 Core 0
66.0 58.0 52.0 76.0 75.0 64.0 64.0
Peak temps when playing a 15 minute Starcraft II replay on medium quality graphic settings, no cooler
GPU HD0 HD1 Temp1 Temp2 Core 1 Core 0
102.0 62.0 54.0 88.0 88.0 92.0 91.0
Peak temps when playhing the same replay at the same settings, but with the Zalman
GPU HD0 HD1 Temp1 Temp2 Core 1 Core 0
80.0 47.0 44.0 88.0 88.0 86.0 85.0
That's an amazing difference. The GPU ran 20 degrees cooler and the dual core CPUs ran 5 degrees cooler.
Just like other folks noted, it is ultra quiet and the variable speed fan is a plus. The fact that there is a USB port on either side means there was intelligent design here.
I've only had it for a week, but I highly recommend the cooler based on what it can do right out of the box. I'm a very happy gamer.
Great -- 2010-08-26 I have these Zalman coolers in every size. I've had them for several years and have had NO problems at all. Super quiet, sturdy, and I have even traveled with one. I only wish they made one specifically for travel. I would buy that one, too. Love them!!!
Super quiet (and it works) -- 2010-08-25 I bought this cooler for my new 17" laptop with i7 processor (so it runs hots). Although a bit more expensive than the other coolers on the market, the increase in cost is definitely worth it. It is very quiet, and it keeps my laptop almost "cool" to the touch. It fits my 17" with room to spare, and it also provides a USB port to make up for the one it steals from the laptop . . . I have had other coolers that didn't work effectively, or were flimsily made. This one is a solid product that actually does what it advertises, and I can now work on my laptop on my lap without burning my thighs!
Zalman ZM-NC2000 -- 2010-08-25 The construction and appearance of this unit are outstanding, it's tough, quiet and does a great job of keeping my laptop cool. It fits, with some effort , into my carrying case for my laptop. Good quality and functionality what more could you want?
Pricey but well worth it! -- 2010-08-12 Like everybody else, I love this cooler. I was a bit skeptical given how the coolers I've used with multiple fans etc did their job for the most part and a lot of the reviewers are claiming near miracle results. However, once I upgraded to 17" dual core laptop it was hard finding something that not only would fit but would also account for the higher temps and protect my investment. So I was willing to try anything as long as it worked.
The Zalman does a great job on both fronts. My HP 17" fits perfect. Moreover, it fits on my laptop tray with room to still use the mousepad. Also, the grip is sufficient enough to keep my beast of a laptop from sliding off. I always had to come up with grip fixes for the plastic type coolers. (Blade Tape for hockey sticks.)
The size prohibits the unit from being the most portable thing so putting it in my backpack is out of the question. But I'm able to fit it in my laptop messenger bag although a bit tight.
The cooling effect is amazing. I'm guessing the vented aluminum goes pretty far in dissipating the heat. Even after 6-8 hours of heavy use, the bottom of my laptop is cool and the top of the cooler is surprisingly almost cold. I thought the fan placement was a bit odd, but again, it's about dissipation and not necessary direct air-flow. Most of the plastic coolers I"ve used would get hot and I could feel the heat even through the bottom. That meant they were working.. ie the cooler was hot and the laptop was cooler, but the Zalman is doing it so much better.
The extra usb port is a nice feature. My laptop is already down a port so not having to sacrifice one more is a huge bonus.
Overall, I the Zalman is a terrific buy. Even given that it is nearly twice as much as anything else out there it's a quality product and my money well spent.
