Horrendous tension issues -- 2010-09-08
I traded out an ancient Kenmore for this machine, and after fighting it for months I wish I had my old clunker back. I've had endless problems with the tension - either the thread snaps every other stitch or half the stitches on the back don't take, and there's no in between. I wish I'd given up on this awful machine sooner, so that I could have returned it. It's too late for that now and I'm stuck with it. Brother's customer support is also non-existent.

I Give Up -- 2010-08-15
I did not buy this from Amazon but I feel the need to comment anyway. I have been using this machine for almost two years - not sure how I've managed. I taught myself how to sew on this machine. Because I was such a novice, I was never positive if the issues were my fault or if the machine was the problem. I can safely say it is the machine. I agree with everyone that mentioned the thread tension. I spent hours researching how thread tension works and no matter what I did, nothing changed. My current problem is that the needle hits the presser foot. Again, I troubleshooted and it's nothing I did. I'm guessing that it might have something to do with the fact that the presser foot is so loose and can't be tightened. The manual is useless and I see no point in spending the money on repairs. I thought I was being frugal since I had no idea how to sew - big mistake! Save your money and buy something better...

Great product! -- 2010-07-29
I bought this as a gift and the recipient sews alot and she loves this gift!!!

Stopped working after 30 minutes. Typical junk -- 2010-07-21
Gave this as a gift, so it was unopened for several weeks. She used it for less than an hour and it quit working. The bobbin quit turning. Took it to a repair shop, and they said after several more weeks that it was more expensive to repair than the machine was worth. Now it's past Amazon's return window, so I'm stuck with a piece of junk. Caveat emptor !

Problem with thread tension -- 2010-07-20
A seemingly small problem, but makes the machine useless. The upper thread tension wheel does not work, as a few other reviewers have also pointed out. I have tried all settings and all stitches, and I have the same problem. I have just unpacked the machine, and I was just testing the stitches up and down a simple muslin material. It worked nicely for half an hour. Then, when I changed a stitch, tension just got messed up, and nothing I've tried afterward worked. Not even returning to the stitches that originally worked...Will have to return it.
Otherwise, it seemed like the machine I was looking for. Very simple to use, and the needle threader is a gift!
I also had questions in my mind about the speed control, when I was shopping. Electronic speed control does not mean anything for the end user, just a technical specification. The only way to control speed is through the foot pedal. It works ok, not too speedy.
